Bill Bevec
Biography
Bill Bevec was born on July 10, 1954 in Johnstown, Pa. Son of John J. and Margaret (Kuzma) Bevec. Growing up in the Slovenian area of Lorain Borough, Bill began to parade around the house pretending to play his fathers accordion. At age 7, he began formal training, studying under John Potokar, a renowned accordion and piano teacher in the Johnstown Area. At the time one of Mr. Potokar’s special students, his son was touring with Sammy Davis Jr.. Bill took accordion lessens for the next seven years, through school playing at various assembly's. Bill was also very active in SNPJ Circle 47 playing for different functions. As a child Bill was influenced by locals band leaders, Dr. Joey Frank, Jerry Intihar, and Eddie and the Slovenes to name a few. And of course other stars such as Frank Yankovic, Kenny Bass, and The Vadnals. Polka music seemed to be main stream in the Johnstown Area. Bill graduated from Ferndale High School in 1972 and attended the Dean Institute of Technology and graduated with an Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering and Technology in 1974. In 1974 Bill moved to Warren, Ohio and began working as an Electrician. At the same time Bill formed his first band. Consisting of Bill on the Cordavox and Debbie Beltz (Bill’s cousin) on drums. They played all over the USA and Canada, even hosting a Polka Tour to Hawaii in 1978. The two piece band played many Slovenian, Croatian, and other ethnic clubs and picnics thru out the country. The two piece band seemed to really put out the sound of a complete band. They recorded two albums and a single before Debbie left the band to have children after 10 years of playing polkas.
In 1984, Bill reorganized the band to a four piece band. They started right where the two piece band left off. At this time they were playing some 100 jobs a year. The band consisted of Bill on Accordion, Joe Colapetro on Sax, Dave Lawrence on Banjo and Guitar, and Bill George on Drums. The band became known as the “Fun” Band as everyone around seemed to really have a good time. In 1985 Joe left the band and Ron Wasilchak was welcomed in as the new Sax Man. The band continued with the same personnel for the next ten years playing all over the country. In 1995 Dave left the band and the new guitar Mark Fulmer was with the band until 1998 when current Guitar player Gary Minoff took over the duties of keeping the solid rhythm section intact. In 1999 Ron took ill and had to leave the band. Frank Lapinsky took over on sax for the next few years. In 2003 Joe Colapetro retuned to the band. The current members today include Bill on accordion, Joe Colapetro, Gary Minoff, and Bill George. Over the past 30 years The Bill Bevec Band has played and promoted Polka Music virtually all over the world thru It’s live performances, recordings, video’s, TV and radio shows, and now thru the internet.
