Chester Budny
Biography
Chester Budny is one of Cleveland’s great southside polka musicans of the 1940’s
and 1950’s. He recorded between 1949 and 1953 78RPM records for Bravo, Dart and Columbia
Records. Sweetheart Of Mine was the first hit in 1949 for Chester Budny. Chester,
who was born in Cleveland, Ohio grew up in the neighborhood of Fleet Avenue. He was
only four when he first showed an interest in harmonicas and other small instruments.
He was six when his father bought him an violin. At the age of 12 Chester bought
himself a drumm and started in singing as he drummed. He soon became known as the
singing polka drummer. After serving in the South Passific during World War 2, he
organized his Orchestra. The Chester Budny Orchestra was a very unique band, musically
in tune with the Slovenian style of polkas, but his sound in some Polish polka are
populair in his golden years. Chester Budney used great sidemans for his orchestra
and recordings. Henry Thodys was the original accordionist in the early days. Henry
is the composer from Fleet Avenue Polka, Rolla Coaster Polka, Katy’s Polka, Wise
Drunk Polka. Eddy Stampfl took over as accordionist in the band. Eddy is the co-

Records. Sweetheart Of Mine was daarbij zijn eerste eerste hit in 1949. Chester Budny
werd geboren in Cleveland, Ohio, hij groeide op in de buurt van Fleet Avenue. Hij
was nog maar vier jaar toen hij voor het eerst belangstelling toonde in harmonica’s
en andere kleine instrumenten. Toen hij zes jaar was kocht zijn vader een viool voor
hem. Op 12 jarige leeftijd kocht Chester een drumstel. Terwijl hij drumde zong hij.
Hij werd al snel bekend als de zingende polka drummer. Na zijn dienstplicht tijdens
de 2e Wereldoorlog stelde hij z’n eerste orkest samen. The Chester Budny Orchestra
was een unieke band. Muzikaal gezien speelde men Slovenian style polka’s, maar de
sound van een aantal Poolse polka was eveneens populair in Budny’s gouden jaren.
Chester Budny gebruikte bekende muzikanten voor zijn orkest en platenopnames. Henry
Thodys was de oorspronkelijke accordeonist in het begin van de band. Henry was de
componist van Fleet Avenue Polka, Rolla Coaster Polka, Katy's Polka, Wise Drunk Polka.
