Dick “The Polka Pilot” Suhay began playing the piano accordion at the age of 5 in
his hometown of Euclid, Ohio. Influenced by Frankie Yankovic and other pioneers of
Slovenian and Cleveland Style polkas, Dick started his own band at the age of 18.
He joined the U.S. Air force where he spent 26 years as a fighter pilot. After his
retirement, Dick has a polka band and lives in California. He has remained close
to his musical roots in Cleveland. For his recordings, Dick returned to his hometown
and recorded with Christine Hibbs - vocals, Dan Wojtila - tenor saxophone, Ted Corilla
- banjo, Bo Wolfgang - bassguitar, and Al Bambic - drums. His last album contains
seven songs writen by Dick Suhay including: Polka Baby, Casaletti’s Polka, Winchester
Waltz, Brigetta’s Polka, Uncle Dickie’s Polka, Dancing With You, and Oh Gee Marie
Polka. Oh Gee Marie was written in 1953 to his first love.
Dick ‘The Polka Pilot’ Suhay begon het piano-accordeon te bespelen toen hij 5 jaar
was. Hij woonde toen in Euclid, Ohio. Beïnvloed door Frankie Yankovic en andere pioniers
van de Slovenian en de Cleveland style polka’s startte Dick op 18-jarige leeftijd
met zijn eigen band. Hij trad toe tot de US Air Force waar hij 26 jaar als gevechtspiloot
werkzaam was. Na zijn pensionering, formeerde Dick opnieuw een polka band. Dick woont
nu in Californië, maar hij blijft trouw aan zijn muzikale roots uit Cleveland. Voor
zijn CD opnamen keerde Dick keerde terug naar zijn geboortedorp. Er werd opgenomen
met Christine Hibbs - zang, Dan Wojtila - tenor saxofoon, Ted Corilla - banjo, Bo
Wolfgang - basgitaar, en Al Bambic - drums. Dick’s laatste album telt zeven nummers
die geschreven zijn door Dick Suhay. De titels zijn: Polka Baby, Casaletti's Polka,
Winchester Waltz, Brigetta's Polka, Uncle Dickie's Polka, Dancing With You en Oh
Gee Marie Polka. Oh Gee Marie werd overigens al in 1953 geschreven. Hij componeerde
het voor zijn allereerste liefde.
