Joey’s four-piece group, also known as the "JTO" was organized in 1984 and has since
become one of greater Cleveland's most popularly active all-occasion bands, performing
a wide range of music for all types of audiences and social events from weddings,
festivals, "polka parties", Inaugural Balls and Presidential visits!
The Cleveland,
Ohio based band features Phil Hrvatin on saxophone, Jim Penko on drums, Hank Guzel
on bass and vocals, and Joey Tomsick on accordion, button box, keyboards and vocals.
When he was nine years old, Joey was encouraged by his parents to join the Junior
Slovenian Singing Chorus. As he developed as a choral singer, he looked to his cousin,
Kathy Hlad, who was an accomplished and very popular accordionist. She was a young,
pretty female with a big smile and Kathy was really good at playing. People just
fell in love with her and Joey was very proud of her. After two years with his cousin,
Joey went to the late Frank Novak, who taught button box at Tony's Polka Village
on East 185th Street, where he was only one of 60 students. Twenty-five years ago,
Joey Tomsick won a button box contest and the celebration went from the Slovenian
Home on Holmes Avenue to the Caboose Bar, where the owner handed him a ten-dollar
bill for winning. That was the first time anyone paid Joey for playing. Hardly the
last. He played with a couple well-known bands, the Circle Two Button Boxers and
the Euclid Squeezeboxers. From them, he learned teamwork, musicianship and furthered
his devotion to Slovenian polka. In 1984, he formed the Joey Tomsick Orchestra. Within
a short period of time, the JTO quickly became one of Cleveland's most popular all-occasion
bands, and began building a loyal fan base. Into the '90's, the band toured several
states, Europe, the Hawaiian Islands, and appeared as guest artists on numerous cruises.
In 2009, the Joey Tomsick Orchestra will mark its 25rd year anniversary of entertaining
audiences nationwide.

zijn nichtje ging Joey naar de inmiddels overleden Frank Novak, die lessen op de
button box gaf bij Tony's Polka Village, East 185th Street. Hij was één van de 60
studenten. Vijfentwintig jaar geleden won Joey Tomsick een button box wedstrijd tijdens
de viering van het Slovenian Home op Holmes Avenue in de Caboose Bar. De eigenaar
overhandigde hem een biljet van tien dollar voor het winnen. Dat was de eerste keer
dat iemand betaalde voor het spelen van Joey. Het was ook bijna de laatste keer.
Later speelde hij met een paar bekende bands, de Circle Two Button Boxers en de Euclid
Squeezeboxers. Bij hen leerde hij in teamverband te spelen, het muzikale vakmanschap
en het bevorderde eveneens zijn toewijding aan de Sloveenian polkamuziek. In 1984
vormde hij het Joey Tomsick Orkest. Al Snel werd the JTO één van Cleveland's meest
populaire all-occasion bands. Het bouwde een trouwe schare fans op. In de jaren 90
toerde de band door Amerika, Europa, Hawaii eilanden en ze verschenen als gast artiesten
op tal van cruises. In 2009 zal het Joey Tomsick Orkest in het teken staan van hun
25 jarig bestaan.
