JOHN J. KUZMAN - Bar owner, polka promoter, honoree.
Poland, Ohio - John J. Kuzman Sr. of Girard, died August 28, 2010, in Hospice House,
Poland. He was 87. Mr. Kuzman was born March 2, 1923, in Youngstown, a son of Angelo
and Margaret Gallagher Kuzman. John owned and operated Kuzman's Bar in Girard for
the past 50 years. He was a graduate of Girard High School in 1942. Mr. Kuzman served
in the Navy for four years during World War II and belonged to Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 419 and American Legion Post 235, both Girard. John was a member of St.
Rose Church, Girard; Fraternal Order of Eagles; Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 276,
Greenville; Girard Italian Fraternal Home Club; Youngstown Saxon Club; Youngstown
Croatian Home; Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Warren, Ohio; and Youngstown
Penn Ohio Boosters Club. As a lover of polka music, John and his wife especially
enjoyed dancing. He was a polka promoter for 63 years and supported all the polka
bands and polka associations. John was the first "Man of the Year" in 1980 for the
Penn Ohio Polka Pals and in 2009 was inducted into the National Cleveland-Style Polka
Hall of Fame for his support and promotion of polka music. In 1996, he was nominated
for Lifetime Achievements at the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame.
