Johnny Vadnal was an extraordinary musician and composer. His musical career was
the center of his life and lasted for over 60 years. At first with his siblings Valerie,
Tony, Frank and Richie and later with a number of very talented sidemen. He brought
music, especially the “Cleveland Style Polka” into the lives of thousands. He used
the Mass-Media: RCA Records, Radio, T.V. from 1949 to 1965, tapes and finally CD’S.
Records show that his music was not only heard locally and nationally but also internationally.
As a composer, he left a number of well known and often heard songs – Such as the
“Slap-Happy Polka”, his theme song “The Wayside Polka” and his last composition the
“My Alice Waltz”. The quality and excellence of his musical talent was recognized
many times over through awards and recognition of his musical achievements. For example,
he was inducted into the International Polka Music Hall of Fame, the National “Cleveland
Style” Polka Hall of Fame, and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame. But the highlights
of his music career were experienced in his live performances and direct contact
with his “Fans”. A “Love Affair” with his fans began in 1949 when he was elected
by popular vote and given the title of “Cleveland’s Polka King” and for him this
“Love Affair” never ended. As with his mother, arthritis forced him to retire. He
was too much a musician to accept playing poorly or less than his best. He did have
one final hope – to play just once again. This hope was fulfilled in April 2007.
Johnny summed things best: “Words cannot express all the wonderful people I have
met, the loyalty of my fans and the true enjoyment I have felt by making “Happy Memories”.
Johnny Vadnal was een buitengewone getalenteerde muzikant en componist. Zijn muzikale
carrière was de spil in zijn leven en duurde meer dan 60 jaar. Voor het eerste met
zijn broers en zussen Valerie, Tony, Frank en Richie. Later met een aantal zeer getalenteerde
mede muzikanten. Hij bracht de muziek, met name de Cleveland style polka’s in het
leven van duizenden. Hij maakte daarbij gebruikvan RCA Records, radio, tv, en in
1949-1965 platen, cassettes en tenslotte CD'S. Zijn muziek werd niet alleen beluisterd
op lokaal en nationaal niveau, maar ook internationaal. Als componist liet hij een
aantal bekende en vaak gehoord songs na zoals: ‘Slap Happy Polka’ zijn thema melodie
‘Wayside Polka’ en zijn laatste compositie ‘My Alice Waltz’. De kwaliteit en de excellentie
van zijn muzikale talent werd vele keren erkend door middel van prijzen. Een erkenning
van zijn muzikale nalatenschap. Zo werd hij bijvoorbeeld opgenomen in de Internationale
Polka Music Hall of Fame, de Nationale Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame, en de
nationale Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Hoogtepunten van zijn muzikale carrière vond
hij de live optredens en rechtstreekse contacten met zijn fans. Een ‘Love Affair’
met zijn fans begon al in 1949 toen hij werd verkozen door stemming en daarbij de
titel ‘Cleveland's Polka King’ kreeg. Die band met zijn fans werd nooit beëindigd.
Evenals die met zijn moeder. Als artiest werd hij gedwongen met pensioen te gaan.
Maar Johnny was te veel muzikant om te accepteren dat zijn spel slechter werd, of
tenminste minder goed dan hij ooit kon. Hij deed nog één keer een laatste poging.
Nog één keer optreden. Zijn laatste hoop. Zijn wens kwam uit in april 2007. Johnny
zei: ‘Ik kan het niet in woorden uitdrukken, al die prachtige mensen die ik heb ontmoet,
de loyaliteit van mijn fans. Het ware genot wat ik heb gevoeld. Ik bewaar ontzettende
goeie herinneringen’.
