Slovenian Picnic Waltz
Martin J. Serro was the son of Slovenian parents, Frank (Cerar) Serro and Mary Drop Serro. Martin was a polka legend in the Western PA area. He learning the button box at an early age. Martin owned and operated the Irwin Trailer Sales before retiring in 1975. Mr. Serro moved to Sarrasota, Florida in 1980 to be closer to his children. In his earlier years, Martin had a polka orchestra, known as Martin Serro and his Trio and later as Martin Serro and the LaValles in which he played the button accordion. The trio continued performing until 1942 playing for dances, weddings and picnics. During the same period of time, he hosted a radio show over WHJB, Greensburg, which aired twice weekly from 1935 to 1942. In addition to TV and radio appearances, Martin had a hit recording with the LaVelles in 1960 called The Slovenian Picnic Waltz. This song and Martin were inducted into the Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame.
In 1960 Martin and Lou LaValle got together. Lou had formed his own Lou LaValle Orchestra along with his brothers Tony, Mel, Reggie and nephew Bob. Lou was of Italian descent but grew up among the Slovenian people in Hermine, PA and learned to love the Slovenian style of music.Martin and Lou began by recording Oh My Darling Polka which was an Americanized styling of an old Slovenian melody. Six month later, the Slovenian Picnic Waltz appeared on the market.
Martin encouraged many young people in the area to master the button box accordion
by traveling to Slovenia and bringing many button boxes back to the states for them.
Many of these students learned the button technique from Martin's friend, Mario Mosti
of Jeannette. In 1970, Martin founded the Herminie Button Box Club which recorded
for Greyko. Martin was a lifetime member of the Herminie Volunteer Fire Company,
Irwin Lions Club, Loyal Order of the Moose in Irwin, past president of the Irwin-

Button box bespelen leerde hij al op jonge leeftijd. Martin was de eigenaar van de Irwin Trailer Sales tot aan zijn pensionering in 1975. Hij verhuisde in 1980 naar Sarasota, Florida om dichter bij zijn kinderen te zijn. In zijn begin jaren had Martin een polka orkest dat bekendheid genoot als Martin Serro en zijn Trio en later als Martin Serro en de LaValles. Hij speelde button box. Zijn trio bleef bestaan tot 1942 en speelde op dansavonden, bruiloften en picknicks. In dezelfde tijd was hij presentator van een radioshow voor WHJB, Greensburg, die tweemaal per week uitgezond van 1935 tot 1942. Naast tv en radio optredens had Martin een hit met de LaVelles in 1960. De titel was De Slovenian Picnic Waltz. Met dit nummer werd Martin in opgenomen in de Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame.
In 1960 gingen Martin en Lou Lavalle samenwerken. Lou had zijn eigen Lou Lavalle Orkest met zijn broers Tony, Mel, Reggie en neef Bob. Lou was van Italiaanse afkomst, maar hij groeide op in het Sloveense gebied van Hermine, PA. Hij hield van de Sloveense muziek stijl. Martin en Lou namen als eerste Oh My Darling Polka op, het was een Amerikaanse versie van een oude Sloveens melodie. Zes maand later verscheen de Slovenian Picnic Waltz op de markt.
Martin moedigde later veel jonge mensen aan om de button box onder de knie te krijgen
door zijn reizen naar Slovenië. Hij bracht knop harmonika’s mee terug naar Amerika.
Veel van deze studenten leerden de button box techniek van Martin's vriend Mario
Mosti uit Jeannette. In 1970 richtte Martin de Herminie Button Box Club op die opnamen
maakte voor Greyko Records. Martin was lifetime lid van de Herminie Volunteer Fire
