Paul Wilcox, host of Polka Varieties in Cleveland, dies at age of 85.

Paul Wilcox, of Fort Myers, Fl., hosted the hour-long Polka Varieties on WEWS in Cleveland every Sunday for 27 years, from 1956 to 1983. The show aired from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. across northeast Ohio, and was syndicated during its later years to 30 television markets. It was the only television program for this type of music in the U.S. at that time. The program featured various popular bands that played Slovenian-style polkas. America's Polka King, Frankie Yankovic, was the original band to perform on the show. Paul and Frankie teamed up as escorts on more than 60 polka tours worldwide. Paul had a broadcasting career that spanned five decades. He began on radio in 1947 and retired from radio in 1990 in Florida. He was also a news and sportscaster at NewsChannel5 in the 1960s. He was a distinguished flyer in the United States Air Force in the Korean War and World War II. Paul was a POW of the communists during the Korean War. He once told a fellow WEWS employee that he would count the ants in his cell to help pass the time. Paul will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery.

June 22,

Martin Serro (1915 - 2009) has passed away

Martin J. Serro, 93, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Irwin, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009. Martin was the son of Slovenian parents, Frank (Cerar) Serro and Mary Drop Serro. He owned and operated the Irwin Trailer Sales before retiring in 1975 and moved to Sarasota in 1980. In his earlier years, Martin had a polka orchestra, known as "Martin Serro and his Trio" in which he played the button accordion. The trio continued performing until 1942 playing for dances, weddings and picnics. During the same period of time, he hosted a radio show over WHJB, Greensburg, which aired twice weekly from 1935 to 1942. In addition to TV and radio appearances, Martin had a hit recording in 1960 called The Slovenian Picnic Waltz. This song and Martin were inducted into the Cleveland Polka Hall of Fame. Martin encouraged many young people in the area to master the button box accordion by traveling to Slovenia and bringing many button boxes back to the states for them. Many of these students learned the button technique from Martin's friend, Mario Mosti of Jeannette. Martin was a lifetime member of the Herminie Volunteer Fire Company, Irwin Lions Club, Loyal Order of the Moose in Irwin, past president of the Irwin-Norwin Chamber of Commerce, Jeannette Toastmasters, SNPJ Lodge 87 and the Crystal Ballroom in Herminie, Button Box Club of Herminie, Croatian Lodge of Cokeburg, St. Edwards and Immaculate Conception churches in Pennsylvania and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sarasota. He was chairman of the 1973 North Huntingdon Bi-Centennial. Martin is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jennie Frowen Serro, of Sarasota; daughters, Marlene Davis and her husband, Chuck, of Acworth, Ga., and Dr. Linda Serro of Estero, Fla.; three grandchildren, Dr. Gregory Houck and his wife, Rachel, of Estero, Catherine Mazur and her husband, Gary, of Holiday, Fla., and Michael Houck, of Estero; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Houck and Ella Mazur. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, John, Joseph and Louis; and four sisters, Mary Garcar, Rose Andrewson, Anna Serro and Frances Golobish. He has one surviving sister, Jennie Baloh, of Herminie; and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the JAMES W. SHIRLEY FUNERAL HOME, Clay Pike, North Huntingdon. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Herminie. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Crystal Ballroom in Herminie following the Mass and interment at the Westmoreland Memorial Park in Greensburg. Donations may be made in Martin's honor to the TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

News from Alex Meixner.

After a long search, my family is relocating to Florida. With the tremendous amount of traveling I do for gigs, it’s easier for us to be based closer to Jamie’s family down there…and winter is much better than it is for us in Pennsylvania! I’m taking most of June off to get situated and then it’s back to the road in July….. also in July, I will be premiering- “Stay All Night” my new album! I’m very excited about this one and sure y’all will like this. Without putting too much pressure on the final mixes (which are currently being tweaked….) – I think the live energy of the show has been captured. I have some new originals, as well as some fan favorites. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing my friends in Kimberley, British Columbia and Utica, NY next month. If you’re in the area (or if you’re not try to make it to the areas!) for the Kimberley International Old Time Accordion Championships (www.kiotac.ca) and the Bavarian Festival sponsored by the Utica Maennerchor in Marcy, NY – they’re sure to be a fun time. See ya down the road.

Alex.

News from AJ Hite,

Hi Everybody,

It has been a while since I have sent you any information on the radio show, "Slovenian Melodies". I hope the return of spring finds you well and still enjoying polka music. Our radio show has been doing quite well since we moved to 6:00 PM and since we launched our website in July. We have made many changes to both and want you to stop by and check out the website, if you haven't lately. We just added a "Show Facts" page that gives you information as to the bands and songs that we are playing each week on our show. We are trying to give our listeners a wide variety of tunes and bands and a chance to go back and hear some songs that haven't been played on the polka radio shows very much in the last decade or so. Also check out our "Radio Shows" page to listen to a show that is uploaded almost every week. Any comments you have, please let us know and please let your friends know about the show and website. Also, anything we can put on the radio show or website to promote you, your show, your band, whatever, get it to us and we will do so, free of charge. Thanks to all who have helped us in the past. Take care.

Dear everyone,

I regret and am also relieved to let you know that I'm taking a break from this whole internet radio scene for a while, since I've been lacking in enthusiasm and do not care about this as much as my musical (instruments) hobbies. To anyone who has sent me requests and dedications for the "next" show, I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused. I really, really CANNOT thank you enough for sending me recordings of your bands to me for airplay. Your recordings are all keepers, and I'm sure will be used again soon by myself to promote polkas, as you have helped me over the years. I enjoyed receiving recordings in the mail, and developing new internet friendships who are musicians. Thanks for making "Polka Radio Melbourne" a tremendous success! Downloads of the shows will still be available, and the large catalogue of recordings will stay online.

Thank you again for the support and the music sent. I hope that some of you enjoyed my podcasts.

Phillip.

News from Denny Anderson.

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,

Many of you may remember Art Walunas who some years back had the hit recording of “No Beer In Heaven” and also the hit recording of “Old Milwaukee Polka” written by Art. Art Walunas has had a long and productive career in Western Music and just recently, recorded and wrote lyrics adapted to the “Pittsburgh Way Polka” in honor of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team, pseudo name, “Pittsburgh Steelers Song” / sing-a-along.

I had the pleasure of adding vocals and other things to the recording along with Dorian Chalmers and Joey Johnson (the Tailgaters) at Joey Johnson’s studio in Minneapolis.

It’s a fun song and may be a regional; however, everyone knows football and the Steelers and as we all know football season is nearing the exciting end. the “Steelers” have won the “AFC” and are on their way to the “Superbowl”.

Football Orchestra with vocals and hell raising by the Tailgaters”.

I’d like to start out 2009 wishing everyone a safe, healthy and prosperous new year and also to thank everyone for visiting the web site.  I am really proud to say that since September 2008 I have seen more than the double the number of visitors over last year.  And, I thought 2007 was fantastic!  I’m just hoping that I can keep on spreading polkas over the whole world.  Again thank you for all of you support.
