arguably the best ability of any Cleveland-
Paul Yanchar started his music lessons at 12, when he was a sixth grade student at St. Lawrence School. His formal training was limited to that given by a marching band leader, Frank Becay. Instruction was part of the band rehearsal and the students paid 25 cents for the lesson at each twice a week rehearsal. Paul was an adapted pupil, so Frank made him his assistant to help with, and rehearse bands organized at St Vitas, Nativity, and several other schools in the ethnic South side of Cleveland. Paul’s love for the music comes from his mother and father both of which were Slovenian immigrants, and though they were not musicians themselves, music was an important part of their culture. Money was not too plentiful in those days, especially in a family like Paul’s with 14 children. But Paul managed to save enough from his paper route to buy his first tenor sax. He started an orchestra while a teenager and later played in a variety of small groups. In 1942, Paul joined the Johnny Vadnal Orchestra and was with the group until he went into the military service in 1944. After the war, he moved to Milwaukee and played with some of the better groups there. He then came back to Cleveland in 1948 and joined Chuck Smith’s band. In 1952 Paul talents landed him a steady spot in the Johnny Pecon Orchestra. Paul is equally adept on the clarinet, tenor sax, and as a vocalist. He has played and recorded with many Cleveland area groups. Paul has also played and recorded with Canada’s Polka King Walter Ostanek. Best known in his longstanding role as the sax/clarinet player and leading vocalist of the Johnny Pecon and the Jeff Pecon Orchestras.
