Father Frank Perkovich

Biography

Frank Perkovich, a Catholic priest in  Minnesota produced in the 1970s the "Polka Mass" album including "Chapel in the Valley" sung by the Choraleers and Joe Cvek's band. With estimated sales of 100,000 albums, this recording is considered the best-selling Cleveland-Style recording since the 1960s.

Drawing on his Slovenian-Croatian roots, Father Frank Perkovich styled his own version of the Polka Mass and popularized it in polka centers throughout America. In 1983, Father Perkovich and his entourage had the experience of the lifetime, celebrating the Polka Mass on the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican before Pope John Paul II.

Father Frank Perkovich’s inspiration to create a Polka Mass had two sources: the Second Vatican Council’s emphasis on vernacular liturgy and a tape of Father George Balasko’s use of Croatian music for his Ohio congregation. With the help of Joe Cvek, leader of a popular Iron Range polka band, and his mother Mary, who composed lyrics, Father Perk’s vision of a Mass featuring traditional Slovenian and Croatian music became reality. Father Frank's first Polka Mass was celebrated on May 5, 1973 at Resurrection Church in Eveleth, Minnesota. Since then, the Polka Mass has not only been celebrated all across Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range and in the Twin Cities but also in many other states including Alaska and Hawaii. In 1975, Father Perk took the Polka Mass to Slovenia. John Hanson’s 1984 documentary Wildrose also includes a Polka Mass. On June 25, 2006, Father Perkovich’s Polka Mass was celebrated at the 29th Annual Polkafest, held at Ironworld in Chisholm, Minnesota, his hometown.

Getekend door zijn Sloveense - Kroatische afkomst bedacht Father Frank Perkovich een eigen versie van de Polka Mass, hij maakte het populair in heel Amerika. In 1983 hadden vader Perkovich en zijn gevolg een geweldige ervaring door de Polka Mass te mogen vieren op het hoogaltaar van de St. Peter's Basilica in het Vaticaan voor Paus John Paul II.

De inspiratie van Father Frank Perkovich om een Polka Mass te creëren had twee bronnen, de nadruk die het Tweede Vaticaanse Concilie over de volkstaal liturgie uitsprak, en een bandopname van Father George Balasko's die Kroatische muziek voor zijn congregatie in Ohio gebruikte. Met  hulp van Joe Cvek, leider van een populaire Iron Range polka band, en zijn moeder Maria die de teksten maakte gaf Father Perkovich een mis met traditionele Sloveense en Kroatische muziek, een droom werd werkelijkheid. Father Frank's eerste Polka Mass werd gevierd op 5 mei 1973 in de Resurrection Church in Eveleth, Minnesota. Sindsdien wordt de Polka Mass niet alleen gevierd in Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range en in de Twin Cities, maar ook in veel andere staten inclusief Alaska en Hawaï. In 1975 bracht Father Frank Perkovich de Polka Mass naar Slovenië. In de John Hanson's Wildrose documentaire uit 1984 zien we de Polka Mass van 25 juni 2006. Die Perkovich's Polka Mass werd gevierd op het jaarlijkse Polkafest Ironworld in Chisholm, Minnesota, waar hij woont.
