Pete was born in Harrisburg, Pa. Pete’s family came to Cleveland in 1916. After an
older brother gave up of playing German chromatic accordion , the 17 year old Pete
Sokach picked it up and made himself famous. He learned to play and became a bandleader
in 1935. Such was the unusual beginning of his musical career. A career which has
made Pete famous from coast to coast. Early in 1948, Pete and Eddie Habat formed
the well-known Sokach-Habat Orchestra along with Kenny Bass and Al Tercek. Cleveland's
hottest band signed with Decca Records. The 1949 recording of Blue Skirt Waltz sold
over 700.000 copies. Other hit recordings include Tell Me A Story, My Baby Loves
Me, Uncle Nick's Polka, Oh Marry Mine and Socialaires Polka. After Sokach-Habat,
Pete Sokach was leading his own orchestra from June 1950 through the mid-1960s. With
himself on accordion and solovox, Joe Lugar on accordion, Kenny Bass on bass, Al
Nagle on piano, Tod Roberts on banje, Frank Mahnic on sax and Ramon Tomsic on drums.
Pete Sokach died in 1966.
